When you plan out an outdoor activity with your family or a friend, bringing a walkie-talkie with you is highly recommended because it does not need internet connectivity and provides security. A walkie-talkie is your ideal tech buddy for emergencies.
Plus, it’s also convenient and portable. It has features that a standard smartphone does not have. It can also be waterproof and weatherproof. With that, I’m going to review a walkie-talkie that does these all – Motorola T631.

Scope of Delivery
The package comes with more gears than the radios themselves. I found out more than just the device and “Y” cable dual micro-USB charger.
It has two yellow radio devices with a rugged design perfect for grip and outdoor activities. Its Push-To-Talk (PTT) Power boost feature allows you to maximize its transmission range without sacrificing battery life.
It comes with NiMH rechargeable batteries, which can last the radio usage for up to 9 hours. It also comes with two whistle belt clips, which allow you to use it when you’re in emergencies.
The rest of the package includes a user guide, accessory brochure, and carry case.
Setup
I like Motorola T631 because it is easy to set up, just like any other Motorola T600 series. For battery installation, you have to lift the battery cover, close it, and turn on the device to get started. Motorola T631 does not have too many controls, so it is easy to use. You have to familiarize the user guide and application before you go on an adventure.
Waterproof
It boasts an IP67 waterproof rating, which is perfect for water activities. It can withstand submersions for up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. It also has a water-activated flashlight for easy retrieval. Together with its waterproof feature, it’s also IP67 weatherproof as it can withstand extreme temperatures.
So if you’re into outdoor activities, you can bring it with you on hiking, boating, snow sports, and even fishing together with your friends or family.
Power Source
The Motorola T631 package comes with 2 NiMH rechargeable batteries, which can last up to 9 hours. If the battery runs out, you might need to charge it for 8 hours before you can use it again. Bringing NiMH rechargeable batteries is convenient if your location has a charging unit.
However, if you don’t have access to a charging unit, then a 3AA Alkaline Battery is for you. This disposable battery lasts up to 23 hours, so you don’t need to worry about quickly consuming the battery life.
If I were you, before you head out on an adventure, make sure to research your location and know if it has a charging unit so that you can identify which type of battery you need to bring with you. But if you want to be sure and safe, you might consider getting both NiMH and 3AA Alkaline Battery.
Range
Motorola T631 can cover up to 35 miles under ideal conditions such as open and vast areas and minimal barriers along the line of sight but expect a reduction in range in real-life situations.
Frequencies
T631 can broadcast both Family Radio Service (FRS) and General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) channels with a frequency range of 462-467 in the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Band. Having a UHF band means it has an extensive frequency, which is suitable for any outdoor activities.
FRS does not need a license to use it, but you might need one when you want to use GMRS legally.
